Avery A. Munnings, Professional Practice Director at Deloitte

During his 33-year career, Avery Munnings has served public and private companies, focusing on accounting and auditing services and due diligence for mergers and acquisitions (M&A). He has significant experience in a variety of industries, including mining and construction materials, manufacturing, aviation and transportation, banking, the public sector, homebuilding, telecommunications, media, and technology. Avery has served as the professional practice director for the Atlanta and Birmingham offices, with responsibility for managing all aspects of audit quality, including accounting and auditing consultations and risk management. In this role, Avery also served as the engagement quality control partner to a broad range of clients across Deloitte’s Southeast Region.
Avery’s experience includes two years in Deloitte’s national office accounting consultation group, where he specialized in M&A transactions. He also completed a six-month rotation in Deloitte’s national SEC services group, where he gained in-depth knowledge of SEC accounting and reporting matters. During that time, he was responsible for pre-filing reviews of documents filed with the SEC, as well as for assisting clients with responses to SEC comment letters.
Avery’s broad range of experience in serving multinational companies, including both SEC registrants and private entities, enables him to serve his clients with distinction. He is well-respected for his deep technical knowledge and his extensive experience in all forms of M&A, including leveraged buyouts, recapitalizations, carve-outs and spinoffs, and step acquisitions.
Avery’s leadership roles include serving as Advisory Partner on several large public companies in addition to leading Deloitte’s Southeast Region M&A practice. Avery is sought after by Deloitte executive leaders, having been appointed to the CEO’s Advisory Council, CEO Extended Leadership Council, Board Council, Co-Chair of the Partner Peering and Earnings Committee, and member of the Board Nominating Committee. Avery has also served as Southeast Region Diversity and Inclusion Leader, and plays an on-going role on executing Deloitte’s Inclusion strategy as Inclusion Leader in Deloitte’s Atlanta/Birmingham/Huntsville Offices.
Avery consistently finds a way to give-back to his community. He serves on the Board of Trustees of his alma mater, Morehouse College. He has also served on the boards of several non-profit organizations including America’s Second Harvest, KIPP Metro Atlanta Collaborative, and Big Brothers Big sisters of Metro Atlanta.
A member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Avery graduated Phi Beta Kappa as valedictorian from Morehouse College with a bachelor’s degree in accounting.
