How long have you now been employed with your accounting firm?

I have worked for Deloitte for 3 years.

Briefly describe your current role, and how it’s different than when we last connected.

I am currently an Audit & Assurance Senior and continue to serve a large company in the Atlanta office. My responsibilities have increased in my current role, which includes coaching staff, reviewing work papers, and assisting in managing each phase of the engagement.

What are you most excited about in your current position?

I am excited to be more involved in the planning aspects of the audit. Additionally, I am looking forward to seeing different areas of the audit so that I can gain an understanding of more facets of the business of the company.

Now that you have advanced in your career, is there any new advice that you would offer to undergraduate students who are considering a career in audit & assurance?

When you work as a team, whether it be on a group project in college or as an auditor on an engagement, be aware of other team member’s roles. It is important to understand the big picture of the audit and recognize more than just your part in order to succeed. Make yourself easily available to become the go-to person for both the company and your team.

Finally, what do you most look forward to in your professional future?

At this point in my career, I’m looking forward to becoming a manager. I will build on the experience I have gained as a senior to contribute to the success of the entire team, and deliver high-quality services to the companies that we audit and the capital markets.

As used here, “Deloitte” means Deloitte & Touche LLP, a subsidiary of Deloitte LLP. Please see www.deloitte.com/us/about for a detailed description of our legal structure. Certain services may not be available to attest clients under the rules and regulations of public accounting.

Briefly describe what is your current role at the firm?

I am currently a second-year audit assistant in the Audit and Assurance function of Deloitte & Touche LLP. I spend most of my time serving a large public company out of the Atlanta office. My team is comprised of approximately 20 auditors of all levels.

What one personal quality helps you most in your auditing career and why?

My organizational skills helped me throughout college and remain invaluable in my professional career. Maintaining task lists, setting goals, and prioritizing are imperative in auditing, a field in which one can be assigned multiple projects simultaneously. Meeting targets and goals not only affects my performance, but impacts the entire team and its accomplishments.

What experience as an undergraduate student provided you with the best preparation for your job and why?

Auburn University’s undergraduate curriculum prepared me well for a career in auditing. In addition, interning at Deloitte & Touche, LLP, during my senior year provided me with significant experience prior to starting my full-time position with the firm. This internship gave me an understanding of what my role and responsibilities as an auditor would entail as well as insight into future career possibilities.

What advice, personal or professional, do you have for students considering a career in auditing?

I would advise students considering careers in auditing to talk to professionals currently working in the auditing field of public accounting. Students should explore options with firms of all sizes, each of which can provide different career options. Auditing touches on many facets of accounting and requires both analytical and interpersonal skills.

What has been the best part of your job and why?

I’m thankful for the opportunity to work with really smart, driven people that are close to my age. It’s rewarding to be a part of a team made up of members who are all working toward a common goal. Working and getting to know people from all parts of the country with different backgrounds has been a great opportunity.
